The Soul of Rubondo Island National Park
Rubondo Island is unlike anywhere else in the Tutoke portfolio: a forested island rising from Lake Victoria, reached only by light aircraft or boat. In the 1960s and 70s the Frankfurt Zoological Society relocated chimpanzees, elephant, giraffe and other species here from European zoos and circuses in one of Africa's more unusual rewilding experiments; today a small number of habituated chimpanzee groups can be tracked on foot through genuine rainforest. This is a park for travelers drawn to forest walks, birdlife and quiet lake-shore fishing rather than classic open-savanna game drives — we recommend it as a complement to a Serengeti or Tarangire safari, not a replacement for one.

Common Chimpanzee
Pan troglodytes
These chimpanzees are not native to Rubondo — the Frankfurt Zoological Society relocated them here from European zoos and circuses between 1966 and 1969 as a rewilding experiment. Only a fraction of the island population is habituated, so tracking is genuine forest work, not a guaranteed sighting.
Sitatunga
Tragelaphus spekii
This semi-aquatic antelope has splayed, elongated hooves that spread its weight across floating vegetation, letting it vanish into papyrus beds the instant it senses a boat.
African Fish Eagle
Haliaeetus vocifer
Its ringing, whistled call carries across the water and is, for many visitors, the defining sound of a Lake Victoria morning — often heard well before the bird itself is spotted.
Nile Perch
Lates niloticus
This introduced giant reshaped the entire Lake Victoria ecosystem after its release, and today draws a small but dedicated stream of anglers to Rubondo specifically for the chance at a specimen fish.

Airstrips & Air Transfers
Scheduled and charter light-aircraft flights from Mwanza (MWZ) reach Rubondo's own airstrip in roughly 45 minutes; a slower, scenic alternative is the outboard boat transfer across Lake Victoria from the Nkome peninsula on the mainland.
Health, Altitude & Inoculations
Malaria prophylaxis is essential year-round in this lake-shore climate. Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is present in Lake Victoria's shallows — avoid wading or swimming near reed beds and rinse promptly after any incidental lake-water contact.
Clothing & Photographic Gear
Lightweight, quick-drying forest greens and khakis for humid tracking through undergrowth; pack a rain shell even in the "dry" months, since the lake generates its own microclimate; closed forest-walking shoes rather than sandals.
Permit Securing & Conservation Fees
TANAPA park fees plus a separate chimpanzee tracking permit are payable in advance. Only a small number of habituated groups are open to visitors and daily numbers are tightly capped, so Tutoke books tracking slots well ahead of arrival.
