The Soul of Arusha National Park
Tucked between the twin peaks of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro, Arusha National Park is Tanzania’s most compact and most overlooked reserve — a single morning here delivers a crater floor, a chain of seven alkaline lakes, and montane rainforest, all within an hour’s drive of Kilimanjaro International Airport. Because large predators are scarce, it’s one of the few parks on the Northern Circuit where Tutoke can arrange walking safaris and canoe outings on the Momella Lakes, putting guests eye-to-eye with buffalo, giraffe, and flamingos rather than viewing them through a vehicle window. We favor it as a gentle first or last stop on a Northern Circuit itinerary, easing into — or unwinding from — the wilder plains beyond.

Arusha’s montane fig and podocarpus forest holds some of the healthiest colobus troops on the Northern Circuit. Watch for their dramatic gliding leaps between canopy gaps — the long white cape of fur acts almost like a parachute.

No road descends into Ngurdoto Crater, so its buffalo herds, warthogs, and waterbuck are viewed only from the rim — locals call it "Little Serengeti" for the sense of an untouched world going about its business below you.

Giraffe move freely between the Momella Lakes floodplain and surrounding acacia stands, often browsing within easy, unhurried view of the access road.

Each of the seven Momella Lakes has a distinct mineral chemistry and color, which drives how much blue-green algae grows in it — flamingo numbers on any given lake shift with those algae blooms from season to season.

Airstrips & Air Transfers
No dedicated airstrip inside the park; visitors typically arrive by road in 20–45 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha town, making it an easy add-on rather than a fly-in destination.
Health, Altitude & Inoculations
Standard malaria prophylaxis is still advised at the lower gate areas despite the altitude. Mount Meru’s higher slopes bring a genuine temperature drop, so plan accordingly if climbing.
Clothing & Photographic Gear
Neutral earth tones for game drives and canoeing; closed-toe walking shoes and a warm layer if venturing onto the lower slopes of Mount Meru, where mornings are notably cooler than the plains.
Permit Securing & Conservation Fees
A standard TANAPA day-entry permit covers game drives; canoeing and guided walking safaris require a separate activity fee and an armed ranger escort, both of which Tutoke arranges in advance.
